The Organic Architecture Guild is a Non-Profit Corporation, who's mission is to establish the best practices in sustainable development. We support and promote projects who's very design nature visually and functionally promotes the virtues of craft, embodies elements of history and culture to form a sense of place, integrates sustainable technology appropriately, and preserves and enhances our natural resources and processes.
The Guild supports the comprehensive process of creating Organic Architecture as an integrated systems design and project management approach that establishes a methodology for sustainable project planning, delivery and implementation. We also support the diversity of individual applications, techniques and styles of practitioners as one of the core values that is supported is the creation of unique, human specific, site based architectural development.
We measure sustainability and efficiency as the total life cycle cost for both the individual project and the community within which it exists as well as the total embodied costs in each aspect of the design and construction process. The Guild knows the vast majority of new development does not maximize its initial investment for its total benefit and aims to dispel the myth that sustainability or "Green Design" costs more.
A Union of Sustainability
Human and material resources are critical to planning, designing and building sustainable communities. The Organic Architecture Guild is the formal organization and network of resources united to promote and develop a higher quality of sustainable projects worldwide. The guild represents the full spectrum of project stakeholders including designers, developers, builders, suppliers, educators, the public etc., who's main mission is to promote, create, collaborate on and develop projects with a thoughtful planning process based on 5 core categories of sustainability: Culture and History, Land Planning and Natural Resources, Technology Integration, Craft and Human Resources, Design Process and Project Management.
A Community Network
Implementing the principles of Organic Architecture is a community specific endeavor and is unique to each region, climate and culture. The Organic Architecture Guild is a geographic network of specific community leaders and resources. In this way, the guild is able to facilitate project implementation appropriately and efficiently for custom project parameters. Organic Architecture recognizes that a national and international standard for sustainability can not exist, without local planning procedures and design strategies as the central focus.
A Vehicle For Education
The Organic Architecture Guild serves as an educational platform to convey the basic principles of Organic Architecture so that we can all develop a common understanding of purpose based on a process of design and project implementation. Through publications and online media as well as through seminars and events, The Organic Architecture Guild is on a mission to give its members and its community the appropriate tools to be able to educate local communities and individual developers towards building with a more comprehensive sustainable planning strategy and project cost benefit analysis for projects within a community context. The Organic Architecture Guild works with government, zoning and building code officials to formalize and implement regulatory policy that improves the sustainable planning requirements governing comprehensive development practices.
A Professional Gallery
The Organic Architecture Guild provides a gallery for projects that exemplify the principles of Organic Architecture. Members of the guild can lead by exemplifying the beauty of natural, architectural and technological design strategies and serve as inspiration for sustainable development.
A Professional Certification Program
The Organic Architecture Guild offers a certification program designed as a set of tools for project developers and stakeholders. These planning and project implementation tools are designed both to educate and to give structure to an already complex and sometimes overwhelming development process. The Guild's certification process allows sustainability to be the guiding principle or glue of all project facets and not a burden or additional cost factor that is often limiting and cumbersome. See Certification information page for details.
Technology and Building Systems Integration
The Organic Architecture Guild understands that the integration of technologies, building systems and construction methods are key components of being able to integrate sustainable design strategies with the reality of current financial development constraints and industry building standards. The Organic Architecture Guild works with industry professionals from manufacturers to contractors to local craftspeople. We perform and organize R+D to develop strategies for systems and products implementation within a SID approach ( Systems Integrated Design). As sustainable design standards and aesthetics increase, the industrial and technical components, products and systems must be ready to be implemented efficiently and economically. The Organic Architecture Guild serves as a bridge between industrial research and development, the design and construction industries, the private sector and the regulatory agencies to maximize the efficient coordination of team based project delivery.
